Long Filler Cigars in Three Quality Levels

Hand-rolled, whole-leaf cigars at three quality levels, from ultra-premium to entry-level and bundled lines, all made in our Estelí long filler factory.

What Is a Long Filler Cigar?

A long filler cigar is made with whole tobacco leaves, each one stretching from the foot you light to the head you cut. Premium cigars are made this way as a rule, and most of our clients pick long filler too. Ours are hand rolled: the filler leaves and the binder form the bunch, and a roller then rolls the wrapper leaf around it.

Because every leaf spans the whole cigar, a blender can plan how the flavor builds and shifts as the cigar burns, so the last third can taste different from the first.

The filler is usually a mix of several tobaccos, often from different countries and from different heights on the plant.

Cigar Co Lab is a cigar manufacturer in Nicaragua. We make long filler cigars to order in Estelí, in a factory dedicated to this one format. Our clients include brands, shops, lounges, distributors, businesses, clubs, and private collectors. Every long filler project is made at one of three quality levels, our Best, Better, and Good, each explained below.

Our other format, short filler cigars, uses sorted cuttings, all from premium and ultra-premium leaf. It is the more affordable choice, with a standard flavor that changes much less as you smoke. Which format a blend uses is decided at the very start, before any blending.

Three Quality Levels: Best, Better, and Good

All three levels use whole leaves. What sets them apart is the tobacco that goes into the cigar and how strict our quality control is. We agree on the level with you before your samples are rolled.

We are tobacco people, and making cigars is as much a passion for us as it is a business. So we won’t just make “cheap cigars” at any level. Whichever level you choose, we work to give you the best value possible.

Not sure which level fits? Tell us who the cigars are for, how many you need, and your budget, and we’ll help you choose.

Best: ultra-premium

  • Tobacco: our highest-quality leaf, including tobacco that is hard to get and, for some projects, aged tobacco.
  • Quality control: our most stringent, far exceeding industry standards. For the details, see our quality control page.
  • Made for: a high-end product with a story to tell, limited editions (especially ones made with aged tobacco), prestigious businesses and clubs, and passionate private collectors.

Aged tobacco here means the leaf itself, left to age much longer than usual before it reaches the rolling table. It is not the same as the resting period of 90 days or more that we recommend for newly rolled cigars at the factory.

Aged and hard-to-get tobacco is usually reserved for this level because it costs more to use. Only top-quality leaf that shows signs it will age well is set aside for many years. Aging it that long brings its own challenges and expense, and the supply is limited by nature.

Better: premium

  • Tobacco: very high-quality leaf that is readily available and very consistent.
  • Quality control: very stringent, and again better than the industry standard.
  • Made for: new mid-tier brands, businesses, and similar clients.

Good: entry-level and bundled

  • Tobacco: good tobacco that is properly fermented and consistent.
  • Quality control: tolerances less strict than at our top two levels, yet still better than the industry standard for premium cigars.
  • Made for: entry-level brands and bundled cigars.

Tighter tolerances, on request

Each level sets a starting point, not a limit. Wrapper color is mainly about looks, so for Best lines we do more color grading and sorting for each box. On request, we can also leave out any wrappers that are too light or too dark for your brand.

Narrowing the range of colors we accept adds cost, because it lowers the yield: fewer finished cigars come from the same weight of tobacco. The same holds for every other tolerance, such as the weight range and the draw range each cigar has to meet. The narrower the range, the more cigars are set aside, and the higher the price. Some high-end collector projects have asked us for extremely tight tolerances and paid for that service.

We’re here to make what you want and need, and we’ll always tell you up front what it will cost. We would rather work with clients who understand what they’re asking for, and its price, than simply sign on more clients.

Your Samples Stay Within One Level

Once your level is set, every sample blend we roll for you comes from it. Choose premium (Better), for example, and all of your samples are premium. They differ in flavor and character, not in grade.

Bands and boxes work differently. For each of those pieces, we put three close options in front of you, ranked Good, Better, and Best. With the cigar, the quality decision is already made, so you are choosing a taste, not a level.

Because the level is locked in, the blend you pick from your samples makes very little difference to the cost of your cigars. The exception is hard-to-get or aged tobacco, which can add to the cost of a blend.

Blends and Sizes in Long Filler

Every blend starts with our intake conversation about the cigar you have in mind: its taste, its strength, and the story behind it. From there, your long filler blend can take one of four routes.

  • A fully custom blend. Built around your taste from the very first leaf, it is the route that needs the most time.
  • A tweaked factory blend. An existing blend of ours, reworked with you, for example with more strength or a different wrapper.
  • A factory blend as it is. One of our factory blends, launched under your name.
  • A homage blend. Our homage blends take a cigar or a style you point us to as their starting point: the Cuban style, two favorites combined into a third, a favorite with your own twist, or the cigar your brand already sells.

Each round of samples is shaped by your notes, and production begins only after you give your final approval. Your blend’s leaf can come from Nicaragua and many other tobacco-growing countries, but never from Cuba.

Most samples are rolled as 6 x 52 toros, but you are free to pick another size. When the approved blend moves into the other sizes and shapes of your line, known as vitolas, we usually rebalance only the filler, adjusting how much of each tobacco goes into each vitola to best match the flavor profile across the differing sizes.

Made and Checked in Estelí

Our long filler factory sits in the heart of Estelí. Our team lives in Nicaragua year-round and spends every day on the factory floors with the workforce, overseeing production.

Every long filler cigar we roll is draw tested: it either falls within a set range or is rejected. When too many are rejected, we use that as a training opportunity for our rollers, because we are always looking to improve.

Once production starts, we keep smoking your cigars. We pull some fresh from rolling and others after time in the aging room, then compare them with the reference cigars and blending notes kept for your blend.

Each year’s weather leaves its mark on the leaf, so no crop smokes exactly like the last. As each new crop comes in, our blenders retune your recipe for it, keeping reorders as close as possible to the samples you approved.

Whatever the level, we advise resting every run of newly rolled cigars at the factory for 90 days or more. Only then do they get their final inspection, any bands, and their boxes or bundles.

Long Filler Cigar Questions

Do you make cigars with aged tobacco?

Yes, usually at our Best (ultra-premium) level, and mainly for limited runs. Some of that leaf may be 5 to 10 years old or more, so a blend built on it is hard to repeat once the tobacco runs out.

For long-term partners, we also offer a program to prepay for tobacco and rest or age the leaf for future orders, if a blend needs it. If that interests you, we’ll walk you through the process and the costs.

Can long filler cigars come in bundles?

Yes. Bundled cigars skip the box and come packed in simple bundles, with the number of cigars in each bundle set by you. They are a natural fit for our Good level, and wholesale distributors often ask for them unbanded, as a value line for the shops they sell to.

How many cigars does a first order usually include?

First orders from brands usually fall in the 5,000 to 25,000 range. Several brands have started with more than 100,000 cigars, and some reorders have gone past 300,000. Projects for businesses, clubs, events, and private collectors are usually smaller, starting at around 1,000 cigars. Brand projects are covered in full on our private label cigars page.

How long does a long filler project take?

Expect 6 to 9 months if everything starts from scratch, or 4 to 8 months if your logo and brand artwork are ready. Both ranges include the 90 days or more that your newly rolled cigars should rest.

How much do long filler cigars cost?

There is no price list, because we quote every project on its own. At every level, the value comes from two things: the quality of the tobacco we put in your cigars and a team on the ground managing every moving part of the project, from the leaf to the box or bundle.

Can I buy a box of your long filler cigars?

Not as an individual smoker. We make cigars only for client projects, so there is no store and no single box to buy. If you’d like a blend of your own, a collector project usually starts at about 1,000 cigars. Every cigar we make is meant for adults 21 and older.

The short version

Long Filler, Level by Level

  • Best: ultra-premium leaf, our strictest checks
  • Better: consistent premium leaf in steady supply
